Distilled in 1940 and matured for 84 years before being bottled in 2024, this extraordinary single malt spans more than eight decades of The Macallan’s history. Its journey began long before modern whisky collecting existed in its current form, and continued through generations of changing craftsmanship, ownership and distillery development.

Released to mark The Macallan’s 200th anniversary, TIME : SPACE was limited to just 200 sets worldwide. The number is deliberate: each set represents one year of the distillery’s history, making the release as much a celebration of The Macallan’s legacy as it is a whisky of exceptional age.

At its release, the 84-year-old expression was presented as The Macallan’s oldest whisky ever bottled, and among the oldest single malt Scotch whiskies ever released. With subsequent releases pushing the boundaries of whisky age further, TIME : SPACE remains firmly within the very highest tier of collectible Scotch whisky.

More than a bottle

The TIME : SPACE presentation is designed as a sculpture rather than conventional whisky packaging.

At its centre is a distinctive dual-chamber vessel, bringing together two points in The Macallan’s history. The outer chamber contains the 84-year-old whisky distilled in 1940, while the inner chamber contains a younger spirit distilled at The Macallan’s new distillery, which opened in 2018.

Past and future are therefore presented together in a single object — an interpretation of The Macallan’s history continuing into its next chapter.

The accompanying oak display continues this idea of time. Its design incorporates 200 individual spikes, reflecting the 200 years of The Macallan’s history commemorated by the release.

The Macallan philosophy

The significance of TIME : SPACE ultimately comes back to The Macallan’s long-standing approach to whisky making.

Based in Speyside, The Macallan has built its reputation around an uncompromising focus on quality, wood and maturation rather than volume. Careful cask selection and a distinctive approach to production have become central to the character of the house.

That philosophy is particularly meaningful with a whisky such as the 1940 TIME : SPACE. An expression of this age cannot simply be produced on demand — it requires decisions made generations earlier and the patience to allow those decisions to mature over an extraordinary length of time.
