The Macallan 'The Reach' 81 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 41.6% ABV
The Macallan The Reach 81 Years Old 1940
A remarkable piece of liquid history
The Macallan The Reach is an extraordinary single malt distilled in 1940 and matured for 81 years in a single sherry-seasoned oak cask, before being released as one of the oldest whiskies ever bottled by The Macallan.
Only 288 bottles/sets were produced worldwide, making The Reach an exceptionally scarce release for collectors.
The whisky itself offers a remarkable connection to another era of Scotch whisky production. Distilled during a period of enormous global upheaval, the spirit then spent more than eight decades quietly maturing in oak before finally being released. Its deep auburn colour reflects its extraordinary maturation, while the character of the whisky combines the richness associated with The Macallan's sherry-seasoned oak with a subtle smoky complexity.
The peat and traditional production methods of the era contribute a gentle but distinctive smokiness, layered with rich sweetness and antique oak. The result is a whisky defined as much by its history and maturation as by its flavour.
A sculpture built around the whisky
The Reach was conceived as more than a vessel for an exceptionally old whisky. The decanter itself forms the centre of a sculptural presentation, held within three bronze hands created by Scottish sculptor Saskia Robinson.
The three hands represent different generations connected to the whisky's journey.
One represents the distillery workers of 1940, who produced the spirit during a challenging period in history. Another represents Allan Shiach, former chairman of The Macallan, whose grandfather led the company when the whisky was originally placed into cask. The third represents Kirsteen Campbell, The Macallan's Master Whisky Maker, who selected the exceptional cask and determined that the whisky had reached its moment to be released.
Each hand carries an individual fingerprint impression, reinforcing the idea that this is a whisky shaped by generations of people rather than simply by time.
Where craftsmanship meets history
The presentation brings together glass, bronze, wood and whisky, with the mouth-blown glass decanter housed within a specially designed cabinet.
The result is a release that sits somewhere between fine whisky and contemporary sculpture — a physical representation of the many hands and generations responsible for bringing an 81-year-old spirit from 1940 into the present day.
The Reach was also accompanied by an original score created by Scottish band Mogwai, extending the concept of collaboration across generations and artistic disciplines.
A collector's perspective
With just 288 bottles/sets worldwide, The Macallan The Reach occupies a particularly rare position within the world of collectible Scotch whisky.
Its significance lies not simply in its 81 years of maturation, but in the combination of an exceptionally old single cask, extremely limited production, historical provenance and a presentation created specifically to commemorate the whisky's extraordinary journey.
The Reach is, quite literally, liquid history — an 81-year journey from a single cask distilled in 1940 to one of the most distinctive Macallan releases of its generation.
